Ethnic, Durable and Resistant this Colombian KANKUI Mochila is meticulously hand woven with love and care by one Kankuamo Women of the ‘ASOARKA Association’. Asoarka was established to strengthen the processes of production, processing and marketing of Kankuamo crafts and thus generate more income for Kankuamo families. Cumbiart and FP are on a mission to help the ASOARKA extend their reach and offer their inimitable crafts to you.
The lively natural Agave fiber and unique crafting process unite to create something mystical, something immaculate that genuinely is a gift from mother earth…when we first stared at this Kankuamo Mochila in piece and silence we felt like we were in a museum looking at an extraordinary piece of Art.
The Agave is Dyed with Natural Colors. This Kankuamo Mochila is made of Agave fibers. After extracting the fibers, they are washed and then bleached by the sun. The dying is done in an oven of three rocks. Dyes come from different plants and tree barks from the area. The designs usually represent natural symbols that identify the Tribe; such as the Snail, the Path, the Rib or the Hill. The knowledge of weaving and dying is passed on from generation to generation by the Kankuamo women. Little girls are taught to weave at a very early age by their mothers and grandmothers. The Kankuamo Mochilas are strong and last a life time. The Mochila is all hand woven with Agave Fiber and has a string that can be pulled to fasten the opening.

Kankuamos are one of the communities that live near the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in the northeast of Colombia. In the last decade Kankuamos have been one of the native communities most affected by the internal conflicts that involve guerrillas and the Colombian Army. This has widely affected the social and cultural structure and identity of the Kankuamos. The crafting of the KANKUI mochilas help the Kankuamos regain the almost lost cultural values; and the sales of the Mochila help support their economy and way of life.
Authentic Kankui Kankuamo Mochilas only come with an ASOARKA Tag. The KANKUI Mochila we offer you here is purchased directly from the ASOARKA Association of Kankuamo Women. The association receives the cash and makes sure it is properly invested into the Kankuamo community. The money goes in the right hands. ASOARKA guarantees the authenticity (click here to see picture of tag) of this Mochila KANKUI. By doing so Cumbiart and FP can guarantee to you that the purchase of this Mochila directly sustains the Kankuama’s way of life and economy. By purchasing an authentic Mochila Kankui we contribute in preserving the existence of an endangered species and safeguard a world's cultural heritage.
