Nefermaat, son of Snefru (the first king of the 4th dynasty during 2613 - 2589 BC) and brother of Khufu, is the owner of the large mastaba tomb - Mastaba16 - to the north of Snefru’s pyramid. Tomb 16 was investigated by Auguste Mariette in 1871. She found the inner walls of the tomb and its chapels were lined with limestone blocks decorated with painted scenes of daily life. It was in Itet’s (wife of Nefermaat) chapel that the famous scene of the ‘Meidum Geese’ was discovered. The Meidum Geese Fresco is one of the most skillfully painted pieces of the Old Kingdom art. Today you can find the original painting in the Cairo Museum.
