We have already introduced to you the Arhuaco People and the Arhuacos Mochilas, click here to view them. Now, the fantastic Kankuamo Mochilas are available as well. The Kankuamo's and the Arhuaco's share similar cultural values and activities particularly their love and respect for Mother Earth and an art of knitting passed on from generation to generation.
Kankuamos are one of the communities that live near the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in the northeast of Colombia. In the last decade Kankuamos have been one of the native communities most affected by the internal conflict between the drug trafficking guerrillas and the Colombian Army. This has widely affected the social and cultural structure and identity of the Kankuamos.
Facing such crossroads the Kankuamos decided to begin a process of cultural revival achieving the legal recognition of their land and beginning a process of recovering their language, empowering their craftsmen and practicing a sustainable use of their resources. In such circumstances crafts such as Mochilas represent a means for the community to reproduce the knowledge that sustains their culture, identity and history. Through the art of weaving, Kankuamo women recover customs, values and their vision of the world that has characterized them for centuries.
Mochilas of Agave Dyed with Natural Colors:
Kankuamo mochilas are made of Agave fibers. After extracting the fibers, they are washed and then bleached by the sun. The dying is done in an oven of three rocks. Dyes come from different plants and tree barks from the area. The designs usually represent natural symbols that identify them such as the Snail, the Path, the Rib or the Hill among others. The knowledge of weaving and dying is passed on from generation to generation by the Kankuamo women. Little girls are taught to weave at a very early age by their mothers and grandmothers. The Mochilas are strong and last a life time.
